Bertie Landes | Head Coach | Field Hockey | Shippensburg University

Describe the qualities that your program is looking for in a potential student-athlete?

Athletic ability is very important as well as the desire to fit into the “team” concept of there is no “I” in the word “team”. The college experience demands that academics are #1 so the ability to use the skills learned on the field in the classroom are very important.

Could you give us an example of a current or former player who exceeded your expectations, highlighting the reasons that player excelled?

In my early years I had a j.v. program and had one player who gave her all for 4 years on the j.v. team; never started a varsity game but supported the team and was a real joy to coach. I have had many players who excelled in the classroom coming in with low SAT scores or C grades who have blossomed on and off the field. It is always a privilege to watch the players mature and grow into becoming a leader as a senior thinking about others on the team more than themselves. One of the very important traits of a player is “making your teammate look good”.
