Pat Taylor | Assistant Coach – Running Backs | Football | Lycoming College

Describe the qualities that your program is looking for in a potential student-athlete?

The main thing that we want in our program is good quality kids. We think that this is the one thing that you need more than anything else is good kids who will buy into what we are trying to do. The next thing we want is to find the best student athletes around, the less that we have to worry about what they are doing in their free time and how are they doing in their classes, the better we can be. After taking those two things into consideration we then look for the best football players who fit what we do. There are certain qualities that we look for in players, good feet, speed, quickness and toughness. We do not necessarily care about size, high school awards, or 40 times/lifting numbers. We just trust what we see on the tape and what coaches tell us.

Could you give us an example of a current or former player who exceeded your expectations, highlighting the reasons that player excelled?

There are numerous players who have exceeded expectations. Most of them will fall into this kind of story, they are good kids who are good academically and come from really good programs. They are no stranger to competing and find themselves changing positions. Once we put them into a position they really flourish at that spot and become multiple year starters and All-Conference players, and even All Americans. Since we recruited good character kids they are often voted captains when maybe they weren’t even one in high school. The respect that their teammates have for them both on and off the field is evident. We see stories like these on a yearly basis and its because we find kids who are good quality kids and just want to play football.  We just put them in the spot we think fits them best.
