Dave Canan | Assistant Coach | Softball | Babson College

Describe the qualities that your program is looking for in a potential student-athlete?

We look for a variety of attributes in a recruit. This is not in order of importance but some of the qualities that we look for are:

1. Athleticism. I look for players that are athletes, both mentally and physically. I love multiple sport athletes and am beginning to shy away from one sport athletes due to burn out and more prone to injury.

2. Coachability. Is the athlete coachable. Is she going to get better or afraid to get out of her comfort zone. Too many college athletes don’t improve because they are too comfortable.

3. Competitiveness. Do they want and love to compete.

4. Get along with teammates and people. I spend a lot of time when I can watching the interaction of the recruit and her teammates and parents.

Could you give an example of a current or former player who exceeded your expectations, highlighting the reasons that player excelled?

We recruited a student that wasn’t highly recruited and went on to become an all American. She had a tremendous work ethic and equally important was the fact that she wanted to get better. She was willing to fail to get better, taking what we asked her to do and change dramatically what she had been doing. She was also a worker.
