Bill Graham | Head Coach | Softball | Indiana University of Pennsylvania

Describe the qualities that your program is looking for in a potential student-athlete?

We look for good athletes for our program. We obviously want good softball players especially ones that excel in a certain area. But we like kids who play other sports and can take coaching very well. They need to be able to run well, hit, have a good arm. I know everyone looks for these and they don’t need to possess all of them but display a positive amount of some. They also need to be good academically. We don’t need valedictorians but they must be good students and someone willing to work as hard in the classroom.

Could you give us an example of a current or former player who exceeded your expectations, highlighting the reasons that player excelled?

We had a former walk on her freshman year battle her way to becoming in my mind our team MVP. She was a catcher so she learned a great deal watching for her first two years. She never got depressed about playing, and worked to get better and understand what she was and wasn’t good at. Then in the conference championship game she hit a three run home run to put us up 10-9 in the bottom of the sixth. We held on to win and she was a big reason we were repeat conference champions.
