Craig Coleman | Head Coach | Softball | Robert Morris University

Describe the qualities that your program is looking for in a potential student-athlete?

We look for the following:

1) Exceptional athleticism – speed, strength, explosiveness, fluidity

2) Mastery of softball skills

3) Leadership ability, as observed during games and off the field

4) Even-temperedness

5) Commitment to academics

Could you give us an example of a current or former player who exceeded your expectations, highlighting the reasons that player excelled?

We currently have a player who played on a travel team that offered her little exposure and did not fully develop her skills. She was not recruited by anyone, and chose our University for academic reasons. Her travel coach called to ask if she could try out as a walk-on. We agreed to allow that, and she was nowhere near the level of our other players. Ordinarily, we would have never kept her, but she did have footspeed, which we are short on, so we offered her a spot with the understanding that she would likely never play an inning except as a pinch-runner. She accepted the offer. Her progress has been remarkable in our program; while she is not yet at the level of a starting player, she will compete for playing time in the future. She has worked very hard and refused to accept that she could not play at a high level!
