George DiMatteo | Head Coach | Softball | Lewis University

Describe the qualities that your program is looking for in a potential student-athlete?

I look for 5 things:

a. Physical skills/talent in softball (run, hit, field, throw)
b. Instincts or a High I.Q. in softball
c. Academic potential or achievement (for academic dollars)
d. Personality-players who smile & have a pleasant disposition. Sense of humor (i.e.
coachable athletes). I did not recruit arrogant players or “Prima donnas” who can destroy team chemistry

Could you give us an example of a current or former player who exceeded your expectations, highlighting the reasons that player excelled?

A former standout pitcher at Lewis went completely unnoticed in high school due to her lack of size, strength, and pitch velocity. However, I took a chance on her because I saw one thing most coaches missed….that was her desire to improve each & every time she threw off the mound whether in practice or in a game.  Her ability to dissect her delivery & pitches without the use of a video recorder or a coach made me believe she was going to be highly successful.  To observe her mental toughness in the most challenging of game situations & displaying her stoic facial expressions while pitching made my job so much easier as a head coach.
