Pat Conlan | Head Coach | Softball | Georgetown University

Describe the qualities that your program is looking for in a potential student-athlete?

We always want the best skilled players.  However, they need to have other qualities to make them recruitable. We are looking for academically and athletically ambitious student-athletes who have a tremendous passion for the game. It is important that student-athletes show leadership qualities, have an excellent work ethic, and show the willingness to be coached.

Could you give us an example of a current or former player who exceeded your expectations, highlighting the reasons that player excelled?

I began the program at Georgetown 7 years ago. During my first year walk-ons, who had no travel ball experience, filled my roster. One freshmen, Christina Gallinari, had only played high school softball. She was a special player – once in a coaching lifetime. While the other players around her had better talent, she had a better work ethic and desire to get better. Over the course of her four years Christina became a wonderful defensive player and never relinquished her starting outfield position to recruited players. She persevered. She worked harder and she wanted it more. Christina continues to be a great supporter of our program and she has become my example of what hard work can accomplish.
