Describe the qualities that your program is looking for in a potential student-athlete?

I’m looking for quality students who are committed to their success both in and out of the water. I firmly believe that each person can be a great student while excelling in the pool. I have three expectations from my athletes – 1) show up every day, 2) do the workout as prescribed and push yourself every day, and 3) do it with a smile on your face. Those athletes that can do those three things on a consistent basis in the pool and classroom will most likely find the results that they want at the end of the year. Those athletes that struggle with those three things…they are the ones who usually do not enjoy the success that they dream.

Could you give us an example of a current or former player who exceeded your expectations, highlighting the reasons that player excelled?

I had a freshman who came in as a solid swimmer, but definitely nothing to write home about. He was committed to his own success and would push himself everyday in workouts. Every day I would expect him to “hit his limit and break” but he always defied the odds. He was one of those athletes that understood that in order to be successful he had to push to his limits and go past them on a regular basis. I don’t every recall him having a bad workout per se. He ended up breaking 10+ school records over the course of his career. Aside from what he accomplished in the pool, he was committed to his academics and carried a 3.5+ GPA.
