Describe the qualities that your program is looking for in a potential student-athlete?

Simmons College Swimming and Diving is constantly looking for hard-working, dedicated and coachable athletes to contribute to its program. The most successful student-athletes at Simmons are those that have a desire to improve and are able to fully commit to the rigors and demands of being on a collegiate team. Having a high pain tolerance helps too!

Could you give an example of a current or former player who exceeded your expectations, highlighting the reasons that player excelled?

In 2008, our program graduated a top-notch distance swimmer. This young woman loved swimming, always worked the hardest of anyone at practice, and would go out of her way to seek extra help and coaching. She was supportive of her teammates, a dynamite captain, and had an intense passion for the sport. This athlete came to me during the third week of her Senior season and said, “I don’t want to have any regrets about swimming when I graduate.” She shared some aggressive personal goals. My response to her was that she needed to increase her yardage and stretch two hours workouts into two and a half hours to incorporate more strength training. She smiled and said “that’s what I was hoping you’d say.” She recommitted, upped her training, put all her trust into her coaches, and broke the pool record in the 1650 a month later.
