Mary Westkott | Assistant Coach | Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving | U.S. Coast Guard Academy

Describe the qualities that your program is looking for in a potential student-athlete?

High academics. A Stem major, high GPA, over all balance of activities along with sport. Times for swimming that qualify for Conference top 8 or NCAA qualifying cut times.

Could you give an example of a current or former player who exceeded your expectations, highlighting the reasons that player excelled?

I can only think of the few students who come to the academy with lower academics but show a good balance of extracurricular and community activities in HS, who come here and struggle a little with academics but then do so well. We have a had a few take a good 5 years to get through the Academy, graduate finally and then love the working Coast Guard and go on to be pilots (which typically are for the high achievers).
