Andrea Daley | Head Coach | Women’s Swimming | Western New England College

Describe the qualities that your program is looking for in a potential student-athlete?

A. Right fit academically (do we offer programs/ majors the student is interested in) this helps me to determine if they are a likely candidate for the school. If we don’t have their program, they are less likely to come and therefore not worth investing the time in recruiting regardless of any other factors.

B. Strokes/events and primarily their times in each event

C. Attitude- positive attitude, willing to be a “team player” even though we are an “individual” sport, there some be some self motivation, “Coachability” willing to put in the effort to come to practice everyday, work hard, try new events, desire to do well

D. Experience and Knowledge of the sport- How long have they swam? What type of program? What types of training methods used? Understand basics of training and competition?

Could you give an example of a current or former player who exceeded your expectations, highlighting the reasons that player excelled?

A recruit that we acquired when I was an assistant coach was a good high school distant swimmer. When she got to school, she didn’t seem like her heart was in it. Also, during her freshmen year she had serious shoulder problems. She rehabbed and came back strong her sophomore year and by her senior year she was a record holder in IM, butterfly, and breastroke events and finished in the top 6 at our big championship meets.
