Brian Vraney | Head Coach | Men’s Basketball | Beloit College

Describe the qualities that your program is looking for in a potential student-athlete?

We want basketball players who are competitors, who are honest, hard working, have a desire to learn/be coached and have strong character. They also need to be able to get it done in the classroom as well as on the court. Competitive drive combined with strong work ethic and coachability can make up for a lot of deficiencies they may have as a basketball player. We want players who are going to do the right thing on and off the court. They need to have respect for their team, their school, their families and those who are making their education possible for them. Overall, they need to be great teammates.

Could you give us an example of a current or former player who exceeded your expectations, highlighting the reasons that player excelled?

We have a current senior who exceeded all of my expectations during his career here. He was the hardest working player in our program and was also one of our best students. He constantly looked for ways to challenge himself to get better and had great respect for our program and coaches. His overall attitude, work ethic and character helped his game advance. He was left off the All Conference Team as a freshman and then was named Honorable Mention All Conference as a sophomore and First Team All Conference as a junior and senior. He was also an Academic All-American as a junior and senior. He led the NCAA DIII in Field Goal % as a junior and senior and holds numerous records in our program. He is going to have an opportunity to continue his playing career overseas and has already been admitted to several graduate programs. His ability to manage his time and his drive to excel on and off the court is what has made him special, fun to coach and ultimately what helped set up his future. His “leading by example” has challenged other players in our program to get better. Most importantly, he is a great person and someone who we never had one problem with on or off the court!
