Pat Doherty | Assistant Coach | Men’s Basketball | Lafayette College

Describe the qualities that your program is looking for in a potential student-athlete?

First and foremost, we are looking for SA’s who are academically qualified and capable of being successful here at Lafayette. We are also looking for quality young men who come from great families, winning traditions (high school, AAU, etc.), and who have a mindset that gears them toward “team success”. Lastly, we are looking for SA’s who are a good fit for our basketball program in terms of their skill set and athletic ability.

Could you give us an example of a current or former player who exceeded your expectations, highlighting the reasons that player excelled?

Ryan Willen, class of 2012, was a player who was not heavily recruited out of high school, mostly because he grew up in a rural part of Missouri and didn’t get a lot of exposure to college coaches. He graduated from our program as the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year in Men’s Basketball, a two-time First Team All-Patriot League player, and he finished as one of the top scorers and rebounders in our program’s history. After a brief professional basketball career in Europe, he is now getting ready to start medical school.

Ryan excelled, and has continued to excel, because he is willing to work harder than the people he’s competing with for accolades and accomplishments.
