Tim Kisner | Associate Head Coach | Men’s Basketball | Lake Superior State

Describe the qualities that your program is looking for in a potential student-athlete?

We are looking for guys that have what we call have a motor, that are constantly playing hard, grinding and doing whatever it takes to help there team win. In basketball you get a chance to see kids a lot in the summer playing AAU and you want to see max effort out of them all of the time. Also, we are looking for toughness, guys that play with a chip on there shoulder and fight through things. We have to recruit those type of kids based on our location and the league we are in. Obviously talent is a factor but it has to come with these other two talents as well.

Could you give us an example of a current or former player who exceeded your expectations, highlighting the reasons that player excelled?

We had a player that was not highly recruited at all, he had some other schools that were a little bit interested in him but we were by far the most. He had to pass almost every school in our conference to get to us but he came anyway. He was ridiculously tough and always played his tail off. This allowed him to become a great player for us. He went from being barely recruited to runner up for the league MVP and led our team to a conference championship. He was very average in terms of talent and athleticism but these other talents allowed him to overcome all of those other short comings.
