Zack Thomsen | Assistant Coach | Men’s Basketball | Shepherd University

Describe the qualities that your program is looking for in a potential student-athlete?

When we recruit potential student-athletes we are looking first and foremost for good kids who do the right things on and off the court and will represent our team and our university in the best way possible. Obviously having the ability to compete at a very high level is extremely important for us as well. We are trying to develop leaders, who will become productive members of society in whatever field they choose to pursue. So we expect our players to be reliable and accountable.

Could you give us an example of a current or former player who exceeded your expectations, highlighting the reasons that player excelled?

An example of a student-athlete that has gone above and beyond these expectation was a player I coached in my first two seasons of college coaching. He not only was a great person on and off the court as well as being reliable and accountable, but he also had a strong desire to help others. He became a student-ambassador on campus to help other new students transition more easily from high school into college. He also served on multiple hiring committees as the student representive for the school. To add to all of this he maintained a 4.0 GPA while also starting on our basketball team. I believe he far and away exceeded what typical student-athletes do.
