Brian McCants | Assistant Coach | Men’s Golf | Indiana University

Describe the qualities that your program is looking for in a potential student-athlete?

Obviously, tournament results are important to us. However, Coach Mayer and I pay attention to who the prospect is as an individual more so. We want to get to know the prospect as much as we can during the recruiting process. Finding the right “fit” is as critical from our perspective as it is from the prospect’s perspective. Personality, attitude and passion are key traits that we look for in the young men we’re recruiting.

Could you give us an example of a current or former player who exceeded your expectations, highlighting the reasons that player excelled?

This is only my second year at IU, but I’ve heard Coach Mayer talk a lot about Chase Wright, who graduated from IU in 2012. Chase just qualified for full status on the Web.Com Tour. The one thing that coach talks about when mentioning Chase is his determination to succeed. From the time he was a freshman, Chase is mentioned when determination and a drive to succeed is the topic. Coach Mayer does a great job of developing the talent that arrives and Chase is certainly a case in point of that.
