Matt Lindsay | Assistant Coach | Men’s Hockey | Penn State University

Describe the qualities that your program is looking for in a potential student-athlete?

We look for highly motivated individuals both on the ice and in the classroom. We want guys that are committed to being the best they can be on the ice, who work to excel in the classroom, and who represent themselves, the team, and the University in a positive light through their actions in the community.

Could you give us an example of a current or former player who exceeded your expectations, highlighting the reasons that player excelled?

We had an individual a few years back who came in as a walk-on with no promises or guarantees. He didn’t dress for a single game as a freshman but his work ethic both in practice and in the weight room earned him the respect of his teammates and the coaching staff. I remember during a practice prior to going to the NCAA tournament we were doing some PP work and this kid was on the PK. He went down and blocked a shot. The puck hit him in the chin and cut him open. I think that best exemplifies the type of player he was. He knew he wasn’t going to play in the NCAA tournament but he was willing to block a shot with his face in practice. His work ethic and commitment were excellent, he was very competitive; he was more than the sum of his parts as a hockey player. He was pretty much a regular for the remainder of his college career.
