Andrew Routt | Assistant Coach | Men’s Lacrosse | Beloit College

Describe the qualities that your program is looking for in a potential student-athlete?

Athletically, we look at student-athlete recruits in three areas. Tactical, Technical, and Mental. Tactical – physicality, conditioning, hustle and overall athleticism. Technical – Stick skills, shooting on the run, defensive positioning, angle play, face-offs, goaltending (any of those areas depending on the position). Mental – field sense and awareness, lacrosse IQ, and almost as important as all of the above, how does the recruit work and react under pressure.

Could you give us an example of a current or former player who exceeded your expectations, highlighting the reasons that player excelled?

A current player is one of our freshman. He was for sure a high level recruit for us, but he has been playing and exceeding at an extremely high clip. He started off the season as a second line midfielder but is now the third leading scorer on the team, #2 SS defenseman on Man-down and is currently on man-up as well. I believe he saw his opportunity to really make a difference and jumped to work hard and get to where he is now. He is always the first guy on the field and one of the last ones off. Every day in the office he comes by between classes to grab a ball and hit the wall or go shoot. He typifies the type of hustle and grit guy that we look for when we recruit student-athletes.
