Mike Murphy | Head Coach | Men’s Lacrosse | Colgate University

Describe the qualities that your program is looking for in a potential student-athlete?

We are looking for good well rounded kids. Our school is highly selective academically, we need young men who are going to be able to handle that academic pressure. We are looking for young men who are willing to embrace a blue collar work ethic at a very white collar institution. And most of all, I am looking for young men who want to compete everyday in the classroom, on the lacrosse field and in life.

Could you give us an example of a current or former player who exceeded your expectations, highlighting the reasons that player excelled?

I have not been at Colgate that long, this is my first year. But during my time here, I have been impressed with the leadership qualities of my seniors. I think that if I had them for four years, that they would exceed all my expectations. They have done a great job of changing a culture here at Colgate. During their sophomore year they endured a losing season (3-11), some animosity between the then head coach and the senior class and just in general not a very good situation. In their junior year they were instrumental along with that senior class in turning things around. The team went 11-5 and won some pretty big games. This year they have embraced a new coaching staff and are setting the example of working hard, staying together and competing everyday. I think they all excel because they have discovered that character is doing the right thing when no one is looking.
