Brendan Nash | Head Coach | Men’s Soccer | Bucknell University

Describe the qualities that your program is looking for in a potential student-athlete?

Based on the school that I work for, your academic profile is the #1 aspect. After we find out if you are an academic fit we can then dig deeper. The traits we look for are a) are you a good person coming from a good family b) not only are you a good soccer player, but are you a good teammate? c) do your goals and objectives fit into our programs? Now we also look for strong, fast, skilled, athletic soccer players. However, when we are making final decisions we will always pick the young man we feel fits into the chemistry of our program the best.

Could you give us an example of a current or former player who exceeded your expectations, highlighting the reasons that player excelled?

Conor O’Brien, who just this week signed with the Danish Champion Nordsjaelland. Conor ended up at Bucknell because the scholarship schools felt he was too small. After an All American career the MLS felt he was too small. So Conor took his talents to Denmark where he has blossomed. Conor excelled because not only was he smart, but he was competitive and a hard worker. So when Conor was told he could not do something, or was not good enough he used it to motivate himself. He also listened to the people who believed in him a lot more than the one’s who told him he could not get something done. Yet, at the end of the day Conor was self motivated. He encountered many obstacles that would have made others quit, but he has endless determination and focus.
