Describe the qualities that your program is looking for in a potential student-athlete?

When searching for a player, regardless of talent/ability level, I look at a variety of things; however, the critical areas are as follows:

  • Work ethic
  • Soccer IQ (intelligence on the field)
  • Demeanor
  • Character
  • Accountability

Without a few of those qualities, even the most sought after recruit might not be someone you want on the team.

Could you give us an example of a current or former player who exceeded your expectations, highlighting the reasons that player excelled?

We have a kid now on the roster who was the KY player of the year last year as a senior. His expectations were quite high coming in (on the field) because of his ability but he descends from the Congo and has had an extremely (indescribable really) difficult path to UC which includes kidnapping, murder and separation from family members. This player of ours has exceeded expectations in the classroom because coming in, we thought he would struggle due to the language barrier and his past. His past is why he works so hard in the classroom. He wants to succeed in life and make sure he doesn’t waste all that has been given to him. Great story really.
