Patrick Long | Assistant Coach | Men’s Soccer | Bucknell University

Describe the qualities that your program is looking for in a potential student-athlete?

Three qualities that are important in the recruiting process:

a) competitiveness- a winning mentality is extremely important.

b) work rate (especially away from the ball)-a hard working player is vital, but I want to see someone’s involvement in the game off the ball. It is easy to be engaged when the ball is near you, but to constantly be looking for a better position and helping your teammates is a tough task for 16-17 year olds to grasp.

c) tactical understanding-the ability to read the game and make correct decisions at adverse times. I want players that watch professional soccer as students of the game and not fans.

Could you give us an example of a current or former player who exceeded your expectations, highlighting the reasons that player excelled?

My first year as a coach I had a player that made very sound decisions on the field, in the classroom, and socially. He was not a gifted player but through his hard work and commitment to be better he slowly worked his way onto the field and contributed significantly. The same kid would not have even made the team if his decisions were poor, but things pay off for doing things the correct way.
