Describe the qualities that your program is looking for in a potential student-athlete?

It is a given that the athlete is technically strong. Beyond that, the difference makers are physical ability (especially flexibility and speed) and mental ability / character (the ability to deal with pressure / adversity / minor injury, etc)

Could you give an example of a current or former player who exceeded your expectations, highlighting the reasons that player excelled?

I had a player who was the best in his position in the region (and top 10 in the nation) who was overlooked by nearly every college because he came from a small high school with a weak athletics program, and did not play for any club / representative teams. This player excelled for the reasons listed above…exceptional technique, physical toughness (he underwent 3 major surgeries during his college career), and exceptional mental toughness in the face of adversity.
