Describe the qualities that your program is looking for in a potential student-athlete?

We are seeking players that are on a quest for excellence….in everything they do. We want student athletes who, not only want, but are willing to work to become a better athlete, soccer player, teammate, student and friend.

From strictly a soccer perspective we look for an honest competitiveness and someone who is better than everyone else at something….whatever that may be….pace, technique, vision, aerial presence, leadership etc. We want to encompass a lot of great talents to complete the team puzzle with everyone having a role. Lastly, kids who make good decisions under pressure.

Could you give us an example of a current or former player who exceeded your expectations, highlighting the reasons that player excelled?

I had a player in the past, when I first took the job, who was a starter before I came in his senior year. I did things differently when I arrived and he was no longer a player who contributed on the field. He was a captain, however, and had he decided to turn sour, many would have followed. He changed his role with the team and became a positive voice from the sideline. He supported his friends and also my decisions as he could see why the plan had changed. Not all players would be this selfless. When he was needed, it was nice to see him return to the field in the closing minutes of our play-off game and bury a PK in the shoot-out. To this day I have a team award because of him.
