Brian Tompkins | Head Coach | Men’s Soccer | Yale University

Describe the qualities that your program is looking for in a potential student-athlete?

The first priority in an Ivy League school is always going to be a high level of academic performance. As a soccer player we are looking for technical ability, tactical understanding and athleticism. In addition we value the demonstration of hard work, determination and good character in a recruit.

Could you give an example of a current or former player who exceeded your expectations, highlighting the reasons that player excelled?

We had a young man who was not recruited by many schools because of his size but who possessed very good skill and a determination to prove himself as a competitor and a smart soccer thinker. He worked hard in the weight room and became strong enough that his size was not an issue and went on to become an all-conference performer and the captain of the most successful team in school history. He succeeded because he was skillful, smart but most importantly because he was driven and focused to succeed.
