David Walford | Assistant Coach | Track and Field – Cross Country | Wheaton College

Describe the qualities that your program is looking for in a potential student-athlete?

Wheaton College is an evangelical Christian college. In order to be a student here, you have to be a believer of Jesus Christ and sign a statement of faith and abide in our community covenant statement. Therefore, we do not look at anyone no matter how good they are unless they are believers. Since XC and Track are pretty concrete with times, we have general time requirements that we are looking for. If they meet those and are willing to be  positive members of the team, we will take them.

Could you give us an example of a current or former player who exceeded your expectations, highlighting the reasons that player excelled?

Each athlete’s story is unique and why they improve can be varied. It could be weight loss, increased training, better training, getting older and maturing into their bodies (more on the men’s side), increased motivation from high school. We have had all these reasons why our athletes get better.
