Describe the qualities that your program is looking for in a potential student-athlete?

The number one attribute is talent; but talent alone usually fails in a long season in a team game. I look for good students that understand:

  • Why they are going to college
  • Good work ethic
  • Solid parental upbringing
  • Able to enjoy the game
  • Sense of humor
  • Compatible with teammates

Could you give us an example of a current or former player who exceeded your expectations, highlighting the reasons that player excelled?

A recent graduate who now is in grad school across the country was recruited with the expectation of playing significant minutes by both me and the student. By the middle of her sophomore year it became apparent that she was destined to play a minimal role during games if at all. Instead of becoming despondent she continued to work hard daily at practice to benefit the players ahead of her. When a recruit and parents visited during her senior year she was asked about her lack of playing time and her relationship with the team. Her response- ” I’m fortunate to play on this team; I’m friends with all the team members; and if Coach thought I should play he would play me.” To me that was the response of the student I had recruited four years prior and the type of student/athlete I’m always looking to recruit.
