Describe the qualities that your program is looking for in a potential student-athlete?

In every potential student-athlete I look for someone who first and foremost loves to play golf, not because their parents or someone else wants them to, but because they enjoy the game. I also look for characteristics of self-discipline. Do they spend the time and effort it takes to get better at this sport. I always look for potential student-athletes who take the initiative and are active in searching for their perfect college choice. I want the majority of the communication to be between me and the student-athlete, not just me and their parents. I want my potential student-athlete to have a good sense of time management. It is definitely a skill that you learn through experience, but it is impressive when a student-athlete shows they have that skill right away. One more quality I look for is someone who is a good teammate. I want that individual to understand that her choices or actions need to be for the better of the team and not just the individual.

Could you give us an example of a current or former player who exceeded your expectations, highlighting the reasons that player excelled?

I have a current player that came to our program, who was completely out of her element. She came from a southern state to a Northern Indiana College, not knowing a single person. She was definitely unfamiliar with the climate, culture, and conditions that we have. She was always used to playing and practicing golf year round. Her first year, she barely made the team on my 10 person roster, but I noticed something in her during our first week of practice. She was always the first to get to practice, coming at least an hour before to warm up. Then always the last to leave, giving herself putting and chipping goals and not leaving until she achieved them. By the end of her first fall season, she was within my top 5, qualifying for every tournament since then. Most importantly, she currently holds the best GPA on our team. She exemplifies the qualities of self-discipline and time management that I highlighted in my previous answer.
