Describe the qualities that your program is looking for in a potential student-athlete?

I would say that skill is a big part of what we are looking for in a student-athlete, but it is not the only thing. As mentioned, student-athlete is the key. At the Division II level we work on the life in balance model and look for those athletes who compete in the classroom as well. On top of that, I also look at what the individual will bring to our program. Their personality has a big part of what we look at as well, the whole person.

We may find that very talented student-athlete, but they may not be the type of individual we are looking for to represent the program. They need to be coachable, unselfish, willing to put in the extra time and not expect to be catered too.

Could you give an example of a current or former player who exceeded your expectations, highlighting the reasons that player excelled?

We have one player who is in her sophomore year who starts and plays every game. Her freshman year she barely saw the field. She has improved 100%! She put the work in over the summer, asked the questions about what to do to get better and did it. She continues to stive for the level of play we expect and will certainly get there. Very coachable and willing to do the work, although she was not the best skilled player we brought in. She will soon pan out to be this in the coming years.
