Describe the qualities that your program is looking for in a potential student-athlete?

#1 Size- preferably 5’10” or taller

#2 Academic excellence- acceptance is only 36% and we do not have any ‘pull’ with admissions

#3 Athletic and looking to commit to row for four years in college

*We do not put a lot of emphasis on erg score or rowing experience

Could you give an example of a current or former player who exceeded your expectations, highlighting the reasons that player excelled?

A current senior on the team who was a walk on was a terrible rower as a novice freshman. She is still a second or third level rower, however she has worked extremely hard and has come much further than I ever thought she would. She started off very overweight and uncoordinated (she was a thrower in high school if that gives you a better image). Things were so bad that I honestly wanted to cut her…and we don’t really make cuts. In any case, she joined varsity her sophomore year and had the right mind set, but her body was not really cooperating. She was very enthusiastic but couldn’t seem to get the hard work to pay off. The real change was the end of her sophomore year and beginning of junior year. During the summer months this rower lost over 20 pounds and got a lot stronger; she stuck to all of the workouts we gave her and came back in very good shape. This rower has continued to excel in the weight room and has continued to improve with her technique. As I mentioned, she will not make the first boat and even the second boat may be a stretch, however she has really impressed all of the coaches and has made an impact on the team in many ways.
