Kathy Les | Assistant Coach | Women’s Rowing | Colgate University

Describe the qualities that your program is looking for in a potential student-athlete?

Admission to Colgate is extremely difficult. We look for athletes with excellent academics/test scores coming from high school. Dedication is important. High turn-over rates are not usually associated with successful rowing programs.

Rowing experience prior to college is an advantage, but not necessary. We are looking for student-athletes with an athletic background and competitive enthusiasm.

Could you give us an example of a current or former player who exceeded your expectations, highlighting the reasons that player excelled?

There are many instances I can recall as a rowing coach where athletes have exceeded my expectations. Usually these instances are quite similar. I have a novice rower (who has never rowed before entering college) who contemplates quitting the team all fall/winter season because she feels frustrated and behind the rest of her novice teammates in terms of skill acquisition. Rowing is so unpredictable that this athlete can rise to be one of the top rowers on the team at the end of the spring season by mere persistence and dedication to learning the sport.
