Describe the qualities that your program is looking for in a potential student-athlete?

Humility: when a player is willing to put self and ego aside, they learn faster, maintain their composure through tough times, and find a higher success.

Tenacity: a player must be willing to stick with it, whatever “it” is…sprints at the end of a hard practice, chasing down a breakaway, going into a tackle..etc. The ability to never stop until the job is done and done well is a quality that makes a player hard to bench.

Integrity: the most important of all. When players show integrity in their play there is a moral power they possess that is unbeatable. No matter what the odds or what the surface picture is, at the end of the day, the player who has integrity walks away with everyone’s respect and the true victory.

Could you give us an example of a current or former player who exceeded your expectations, highlighting the reasons that player excelled?

I have a current player who possesses all of these qualities and every game she makes my jaw drop with the feats she accomplishes. In our most recent game, the ball was hit long into one of our offensive corners. As the defender was running to recover the ball, my player hunted her down, somehow pressured from both the right and left sides, tackled hard, won the ball, and created a goal scoring opportunity. Walking away from the play, with everyone screaming her name, she just focused on the next task at hand to help her team find success. She’s tenacious (relentless in her hunt) however hunts with integrity (she isn’t dirty or use gamesmanship in any way) and she never searches for personal glory or attention after the fact.  And I know every team we face, the other coach is watching her play and wishing she had one of those on his team.
