Mick Statham | Head Coach | Women’s Soccer | Lafayette College

Describe the qualities that your program is looking for in a potential student-athlete?

There are so many factors that we look at. At a highly selective college like Lafayette academic success is critical. The student must have taken a rigorous curriculum and done well with their testing. We are also a Division 1 program, so we want to win. We look for players that have defining characteristics that stand out compared to everyone else playing in the game. We are also recruiting the families. It’s important to get well behaved athletes that have supportive families in particular if we want to foster a positive environment.

Could you give us an example of a current or former player who exceeded your expectations, highlighting the reasons that player excelled?

Cat Galgano who is now our team captain is somebody who I am grateful for everyday. I actually went to watch one of her club teammates play and noticed Cat at that game. She has been great since day one and has really taken the opportunity with both hands. I followed my gut after seeing her play even though she was not really on my radar and its one of the best recruiting decisions I have ever made.
