Lesley Sheehan | Head Coach | Women’s Tennis | Boston University (BU)

Describe the qualities that your program is looking for in a potential student-athlete?

Some qualities that I look for in a potential recruit include: Someone who is a team player, not all about themselves. Someone who loves tennis, not just going through the motions. Someone who is coachable, and wants to improve. Someone who is motivated in academics and athletics. Someone who appreciates the opportunity given to them.

Could you give an example of a current or former player who exceeded your expectations, highlighting the reasons that player excelled?

I have some former players who have exceeded my expectations by putting in extra time on their own. Most of the players will do exactly what is expected of them but the ones who excel go above and beyond that. Also, I have had players who really have wanted BU tennis to excel and so they put in the extra effort with their teammates as well. Motivation day in and day out on the court and really caring about how they perform usually puts them on top. No short cuts. Another example are those players that just will not ever give up on the court and play to win instead of “not losing”.

A perfect example is a player of mine who just graduated.

She was not highly recruited due to her size and strength. As a matter of fact, when I brought in 6 official visits, she was my #6. I had offered #’s 1-5 and they decided to go elsewhere. So, I offered her to come to BU and she did. She was amazing! She only lost about 2 matches a year and beat players from top 30 national teams. She was a 3.8 student in the college of communications as well. Basically, she was an amazing competitor, never giving up, always pushing herself to be better. She communicated well with me and she trusted me to coach her which is another quality of a good player. Trust in the coach/player relationship is huge and this just worked!
