Describe the qualities that your program is looking for in a potential student-athlete?

It is very important to recruit kids with athletic talent. If you can recruit a kid who has athletic talent but also the maturity to survive and thrive as an independent you have got gold. You might think I am anti-parent. I am not. Parent support is necessary but parents that instill independence and emphasize achievement obtained through hard work have really got the right idea. You alone (the athlete ) must find your way and excel through your efforts alone.

Could you give us an example of a current or former player who exceeded your expectations, highlighting the reasons that player excelled?

I can think of several athletes who exceeded expectations but one comes to mind immediately. She traveled to our university half way across the country. She was an athlete with moderate success at our level but ended up being accepted into med school after graduation.

I have to believe her parents had a lot to do with her success and her ability to do it on her own. This athlete was independent, became a team leader and was emotionally tough when it came to competition. Today she is a very successful surgeon living in the city where she graduated from our university. I think self confidence is the best thing her parents instilled in her.
