Kevin Hambly | Head Coach | Women’s Volleyball | Illinois University

Describe the qualities that your program is looking for in a potential student-athlete?

It is very simple what I am looking for: I want kids that are athletic enough to compete for a national championship that are tough and willing to work their hardest. If they have those things we will recruit them. If not, we are not interested. Then we try to decide if they are a good fit for our culture. What we are looking for is simple, there are just a few kids a year that fit.

Could you give us an example of a current or former player who exceeded your expectations, highlighting the reasons that player excelled?

On my team right now, I have a player who was not really recruited. She is a tremendous student and really wanted to be here at Illinois. She was not a great volleyball player, in fact she would say she was terrible. But she has committed herself every day to be the best she can. No one can match her enthusiasm nor her work ethic. She actually has played in some matches this year and could start for a lot of Division one teams. The thing I love is what she brings in practice every day doesn’t allow anyone else to slack off.
