Describe the qualities that your program is looking for in a potential student-athlete?

We look for players that are well-rounded – players that show a desire to be great both on the court and in the classroom. We definitely are looking for the best players in the country in order to compete at the highest level, while also focusing on the potential of athletes as opposed to where they are in their game at the present time. We have had some success with red-shirt players who have benefited from a year of training. We also spend time looking at players in practice as well as matches in order to see how they interact in different settings.

Could you give us an example of a current or former player who exceeded your expectations, highlighting the reasons that player excelled?

We had a setter who turned into a 2nd Team All-American who definitely exceeded expectations. She learned a great deal after training for a year and watching another All-American in front of her run our program. I think the training, knowledge, and experience of seeing her position have success was of great benefit. She was training every day with this older player, competing against her in practice daily, and was involved with all position meetings with her “mentor”.
