Describe the qualities that your program is looking for in a potential student-athlete?

The top quality I still look for is talent/skill. In the division III level and within our conference this still separates marginal teams to good/great teams that can make it to the post season. Coach-ability is another quality that is important to me. If a student athlete is very, very, talented but does not have a great attitude and is unwilling to work with/listen to coaching staff and teammates usually causes trouble with chemistry/decrease performance. Athleticism is another quality I look at because in most cases that would give an athlete an advantage and cannot be improved greatly through practice/coaching but is more inherent.

Could you give us an example of a current or former player who exceeded your expectations, highlighting the reasons that player excelled?

I had a player that made great improvement and exceeded my expectations in just two years because of transferring on. She came to campus in great shape and was a good overall athlete but was very “raw” skill-wise from poor high school coaching. This young woman worked very hard to improve skills and transformed from a person that sat the bench to a starter. She singled-handedly won several matches for our team because of the skills she attained and improved.
