Describe the qualities that your program is looking for in a potential student-athlete?

We look for three qualities that we feel are important in the recruiting process. Athleticism, Skill, and Experience. Athleticism is the easiest to observe….and with the right information that we can receive objectively is very easy to measure. Skill is something that is very important in today’s recruiting of student athletes. This being my 30th season at URI….I used to be able to bring in diamonds in the rough, and teach them additional skills and make them into real good players. With the limits now with compliance and NCAA rules you need to come already to go, as we don’t have enough opportunity to give the necessary reps to make them into players. We try to pull S/A’s from the better club programs in the country where they have played in National Qualifiers on open level teams that have gone on to succeed nationally. If the athlete can get similar experience from their high schools as well…..the experience being winners helps get the athlete ready earlier for us on the college level!

Could you give an example of a current or former player who exceeded your expectations, highlighting the reasons that player excelled?

We recruited a freshman who came in this year and started from day one. She continues to be one of the best not only on our team but in our conference, as she has been rookie of the week twice already! Again she is very athletic, is highly skilled because she has played in one of the better club programs in the country from the mid-west where she has accumulated experience on a high level that has got her ready to go…..right away on the division I college level!
