Describe the qualities that your program is looking for in a potential student-athlete?

There are many qualities we look for in a potential recruit for our program, but I would say the keys for us are first and foremost are they a good person (do they value the right things and go about their life in a positive, respectful and humble way). Followed closely to that are competitive spirit, athleticism, volleyball knowledge/skills, and leadership potential. Also for us at our given institution, it is of high priority that a potential student-athlete for us be highly competitive academically and are able to excel both in the classroom and on the court.

Could you give an example of a current or former player who exceeded your expectations, highlighting the reasons that player excelled?

We actually have a couple current players that have exceeded my expectations this season. Two in particular were folks that when I first took over the program, they did not receive any playing time on court, but came to practice every day of the season and put in the effort to not only make themselves better, but concentrated on making their teammates better. These two individuals bought into our technical teaching and training, and worked each day to make every minute in practice count. During the off-season, they completely dedicated themselves to our strength and conditioning program, while still focusing on improving their court specific technique and skills.

This season they came in to start the year with the same team first mentality and work ethic, and they have earned consistent playing time on court and continue to grow in their knowledge of the game. I have been pleasantly surprised at their contributions and use them as a great example of total commitment to our program philosophy, training, and team mentality.
