How to Build a Recruiting Profile on GCA

By Steve O’Brien – Goal: College Athlete (GCA)

Recently our website, www.goalcollegeathlete.com, has created a new feature giving high school athletes the ability to create a recruiting profile to help them in their recruiting process. Within our guide: “Get Pro-Active To Get Recruited”, I mention that you should create a recruiting profile to use in your email strategy so college coaches can be one click away from learning more about you as a student, athlete and person.

Today, I am going to walk through how to register and build an online recruiting profile using GCA’s service.

Registration / Sign-up

The first thing you want to do is to register and create an account with Goal: College Athlete (GCA). On every page of the GCA website you will see this in the top right hand corner:

GCA Recruiting Profile

Click on “Sign-up” and you will be taken to a registration page that looks like this:

Recruiting Profile Registration GCA

Within the form on the right please do the following:

  1. Create a Username
  2. Insert Your Email Address
  3. Create a Password
  4. Confirm Your Password
  5. Insert Your First Name
  6. Insert Your Last Name
  7. Select Your Sport from the Dropdown
  8. Click “Register”

A message then will appear telling you to check your email. Go to your email inbox. The message in your email will provide your username, password and a link to start creating your profile. If you immediately click on the link to your profile you should remain Logged-In and you will come to a page that looks like this:

Build Recruiting Profile

(If you come back later you may have to Login again using your username and password and then you will come to the page above).

Now, here is where you can start adding all the information to build your recruiting profile! Below is a list of fields where you can enter academic, athletic and contact information:

Before we go thru every field I want to mention that you DO NOT have to fill out every field. The only fields that must be filled out are the fields you completed to register an account (i.e. email, sport, first name, last name, etc.). If you DON’T fill out a field it will NOT appear within your profile (we remove it). We do recommend uploading a profile picture because if you do not then the gray and white silhouette you see now in your profile will remain there. A nice picture always looks better! Now lets walk thru the fields one by one:

Athletic Information

PROFILE PICTURE

As I mentioned above a nice, professional looking image makes your profile look better. You can provide a nice headshot or an action shot. To do so:

  • Click on “Update Image”
  • Then Click “Browse”. Then you will be able to access your Folders where your Image is saved. Select the image you want and then click “Upload Image”.
  • Then you have the option to Crop Your Image or Save Image. If you like the way the image looks, click “Save Image.”
  • Your Image will now appear in the header of your Profile

FIRST NAME

Your first name should already be there because you entered it during registration.

LAST NAME

Your last name should already be there because you entered it during registration.

SPORT

Your sport should already be there because you selected it from the dropdown during registration

SECOND SPORT

If you want to be recruited to play for another sport please select that sport from the dropdown menu. Both sports will appear in the header of your profile.

Please select your high school graduation year from the dropdown menu

Please select your gender from the dropdown menu

Note: The fields above will all appear in the header of your profile. The fields below will be in the main body of your profile.

MY GOAL

Write a short statement describing your personal goal to be a college athlete. Here is an example:

My goal is to play college soccer and receive a great education that will prepare me for life after sports. I want to play on a team where winning is important and team members push each other day in and day out to improve the team and themselves. I also want to be on a competitive team who competes for championships at the league and national level.

Let college coaches know why you want to play college sports and what you want to accomplish. This can differentiate you and your profile from all the standard, generic ones college coaches get every day.

NCAA CLEARINGHOUSE ID

Please type your NCAA Clearinghouse ID into the text area.

You should register with the NCAA Eligibility Center and obtain an NCAA Clearinghouse ID at the earliest time possible. For more information on now to obtain an NCAA Clearinghouse ID and to register at the NCAA Eligibility Center please go to:

http://web1.ncaa.org/ECWR2/NCAA_EMS/NCAA.jsp

PRIMARY TEAM

Please type in the primary team you play for. In most cases, it will be your high school team but if it is a junior or club team please type in that.

Please type in your primary position or event. You will be able to add other positions/events below.

OTHER POSITION(S) / EVENT(S)

Please type in any other positions or events you play that you would like to add.

STATISTICS

Please type your personal stats in the text area. We recommend listing one year and team per line. If you played on a high school and club/junior team in the same year list those underneath each other (press ENTER to start a new line). Feel free to list Tournaments/Showcases as well. Please see example:

2013/14: Boston High School | 25 Games Played | 17 Goals | 15 Assists | 27 Points | 4 Game Winning Goals
2013/14: Junior Sharks Hockey | 31 Games Played | 12 Goals | 18 Assists | 30 Points | 3 Game Winning Goals
2012/13: Boston High School | 24 Games | 11 Goals | 12 Assists | 23 Points | 1 Game Winning Goal
2012/13: Junior Sharks Hockey: | 28 Games Played | 14 Goals | 13 Assists | 27 Points | 3 Game Winning Goals
2012/13: Mass Hockey Showcase | 5 Games Played | 4 Goals | 2 Assists | 1 Game Winning Goal

(Obviously different sports have different stats so customize for your sport)

ATHLETIC AWARDS / HONORS

Please type athletic awards and honors in text area above. We recommend listing one award per line (press ENTER to start a new line). List as many awards as you like. Be sure to list the year you won the award. Please see example:

2013/14 Bay State League All Conference Team
2013/14 Team Most Valuable Player
2012/13 Bay State League All Conference 2nd Team

HOW I AM GOING TO MAKE MYSELF A BETTER ATHLETE OVER THE NEXT 12 MONTHS:

I think this is information is extremely valuable for college coaches and it is not something you see on other services offering recruiting profiles. Here you get to describe to the coach that you have a plan to get better whether that be athletically or academically. Its shows them that playing college sports is a priority to you, it means something, and you have a plan in place to get to that level. A tough part of recruiting for coaches is figuring out which recruits really want to get better (are ALL IN) and who are the ones who look good now but may not have the character to keep working when things get more difficult at the college level. This field can help you tell coaches you are one of those ALL IN athletes.

Here is an example a basketball player might enter in this field:

-Gain 15 lbs of lean muscle, lower body fat percentage by 4%
-Attending Top Basketball Camp in Summer
-Playing in ABC League against College Players
-Become a better rebounder
-Work just as hard on my defensive game as my offensive one
-Get in the best physical condition of my life
-Lead by example (on the court, in the weight room, in the locker room)
-Push my teammates to become better
-Have a Team First Mentality

Personalize this for your sport and what YOUR plans are to get better.

HIGHLIGHT VIDEO

College coaches who are looking at a recruiting profile, most likely, will scrolls down the profile to see if the player has a video and they will probably view that first. My advice is to make sure you have a quality video (does not have to be professional) with some solid clips of you performing your sport. They don’t have to be mind-blowing but enough to show the coach you are legitimate enough to play at their level.

Copy and paste the link to a YouTube or Vimeo video you have into the field. Click Update Changes at the bottom and your video will appear. (Currently we only support YouTube or Vimeo video links).

TESTIMONIALS

Please add any testimonials or recommendations your coach, teammates or others have written about you. This can help college coaches get a better understanding of you as a student, athlete and person. Your parents could also describe your athletic history, what they hope for you and how they are going to support you. College Coaches definitely want to get to know parents as well.
How do you get these testimonials? Ask! Ask your coaches and teammates to send you an email about what they think of you as an athlete and person. You can do the same for your teammates. The best praise you can get is from someone else, not yourself, so if a college coach sees that your coaches and/or teammates have taken the time to write about you it will make an impact.

PRESS / MEDIA LINKS

Please copy and paste a link (URL) to articles or media you are highlighted in within the field above. You may want to type in where the URL came from before pasting the link. For example:
Boston Globe: http://www.boston.com/sports/schools/football
High School Sports Blog: http://www.highschoolsportsblog.com
ESPN High School: http://www.espn.go.com/blog/boston/high-school/category/(Note: For the Link to be CLICKABLE you must have http:// before the URL.
Usually it will appear when you copy/paste from the webpage but if it does not you have to type in http:// before the URL.)

This is a great field that I don’t think a lot of other profile services offer. Here you can add links to any online newspaper or website that have written about you. You may have been highlighted in a local paper or school website and now the college coaches will be one click away from reading about you.

GAME SCHEDULE / UPCOMING CAMPS-SHOWCASES

Please copy and paste a link (URL) to your game schedule and/or camps-showcases you will be attending so college coaches know where to see you play within the field above. Please label the link before pasting the URL. For example:

High School Schedule: http://www.highschoolschedule.coml
Chicago Showcase Tourney – Fall 2014: http://www.chicagoshowcase.com/

(Note: For the Link to be CLICKABLE you must have http:// before the URL. Usually it will appear when you copy/paste from the webpage but if it does not you have to type in http:// before the URL.)

Make sure coaches know where and when you are playing!

CURRENT SCHOOL

Please type in your current school.

SCHOOL ADDRESS

Please type in your school’s address.

GPA

Please type in your Grade Point Average

SAT SCORE

Please select your SAT score from the dropdown menu.

ACADEMIC HONORS

Please type academic awards and honors in text area above. We recommend listing one award per line (press ENTER to start a new line). List as many awards as you like. Be sure to list the year you won the award. Please see example:

Junior Year: National Honor Society
Junior Year: Top 10% of My Class
Sophomore Year: Student of the Month (October and January)

HOW I AM GOING TO MAKE MYSELF A MORE ATTRACTIVE STUDENT OVER THE NEXT 12 MONTHS:
Example:
-Take SAT Prep Class
-Raise my Grade Point Average (GPA) by .5 points
-Enroll in an AP Course
-Get No Less Than a 3.0 every term

(Personalize this for YOU and what YOUR plans are to become a better student.)

Key Points:

  • Remember to always save your profile. Within the edit mode of your profile there is a blue button at the top and at the bottom that say “Update Profile”. Make sure to press that button to Save the edits you have made within your profile.

Recruiting Profile Update

  • The link to your profile: After you have pressed “Update Profile” (or you can click “View Profile” in the header) you will see some guidelines beneath the header of your profile (note: these guidelines are shown only to you, not coaches or others who may view your profile). The top line says “Public Profile URL” and then shows the link to your public profile URL:

Public Profile URL

This “Public Profile URL” is the link you can put in your emails to coaches when trying to get their attention. Remember, college coaches will rarely search for an athletes profile so your profile and link should be used within your emails so the college coaches can just click on the link, come to your profile and learn more about you as a student, athlete and person.

I hope this article/tutorial has given you some insight how to build a solid recruiting profile to help you get college coaches attention and on their recruiting lists. Please check out the Student-Athlete Guide To Be Recruited as well as the GCA Blog to find more tips and strategies to help you reach your goal of playing college sports.
