Example Email: Referencing the Program’s Upcoming Losses to Graduation

Example Scenario: Your name is John Doe. You are currently a junior at ABC High School (in Springfield, IL) and play men’s soccer. You are a midfielder. You are researching the men’s soccer program at XYZ University. You realize that the team has 8 juniors, 3 of them being midfielders that will graduate the same year you will be graduating from high school (2014) and entering college as a freshman. You could send the coaches (assistants and head coach) an email like the below (remember Purpose, Benefit, Request):

Example Email: Referencing the Program’s Upcoming Losses to Graduation

Subject Line: Coach Smith : I noticed the team was graduating 8 players at the end of 2014

Body:

Hi Coach Smith,

Purpose: I was researching your program and noticed that at the end of next year (2014) you will be graduating 8 members of your team including 3 mid-fielders. I have been following your program for many years and feel I could fill the void that will be left when your 2014 class graduates.

Benefit: My name is John Doe. I am a junior midfielder at ABC High School in Springfield, IL. I have the ability to play at the Division 2 level and have the academics in place to be accepted by XYZ’s admissions.

Request: Coach Smith, I am planning on visiting campus next month and was hoping you had some time to meet and discuss your program and what types of student-athletes fit your system? I would also be happy to speak by phone prior? I appreciate your time and please let me know.

Regards,

John

Disclaimer: The text Purpose, Benefit, Request words I insert above are a guide for you the reader. Do NOT insert the text Purpose, Benefit, Request in your actual emails!!

The previous email was short, relevant and asked for a next step. I feel that this subject line is very compelling for any coach and it will get them to open the email. Also, you are showing the coach that you are doing solid due diligence in knowing what their current roster looks like, who will be graduating and when. It shows you are doing the research and want to be a part of their program.
